A New Mexico Fun Fact: “The Albuquerque Box”

Have you ever wondered why the International Balloon Fiesta is in Albuquerque, New Mexico instead of a larger city or maybe in the middle of nowhere? It turns out that Albuquerque is the perfect place for a hot-air balloon festival because of a weather phenomenon called the “Albuquerque Box.”  The Albuquerque box refers to the wind patterns above Albuquerque. The winds at low altitude are opposite the winds that blow at a higher altitude. Balloonists love the Albuquerque box because they can fly their balloons at a lower altitude and move away from the field, then fly their balloons at a higher altitude to come back to the field.
